The mission of the Medical Laboratory Technology Program is to prepare the students to function efficiently, confidently and safely in clinical laboratory settings. This program consists of general education courses, specific MLT courses, and clinical rotations in a hospital laboratory in the health care sector. B.Sc MLT Degree is conferred to students on successful completion of this study programe. The Medical Laboratory Technology graduate may find a rewarding career in hospital laboratory, physicisans’ health care setups, outpatient clinics, minor emergency centers, veterinary offices, governmental organizations and industrial labs..
The time required to complete the MLT program is three years and six months. Three years are devoted in the College campus taking courses for preparation for final exams. The six months are assigned to internship for clinical rotations at the hospital. During each clinical rotation, each student has to get attached with a Hospital and get all necessary practical training required for him.
Medical Laboratory Technology is a profession which combines the challenges and rewards of both medicine and science. A Medical Laboratory Technician is concerned with the accurate performance at par with the excellence for more accurate dependable and reliable diagnosis of laboratory tests to determine the absence, presence, extent and cause of disease. As a vital member of the health care team, he or she works closely with the medical doctor to render the best of services and care for the ill or injured patients.
Medical Laboratory Technicians become proficient in the four major areas of the hospital laboratory - Microbiology, Hematology, Blood Banking, Clinical Chemistry, Pathology, Preventive Medicine - utilizing an array of complex precision instruments and a variety of automated microprocessor based electronic equipments and electronic equipment. The students awail the opportunity to interact with the pathologist, a medical doctor who is in charge of each lab, as well as with other physicians and additional health care personnel.
Pt. L.M.S. Govt. P.G. College Rishikesh is the one and only Govt. College in Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun to cater the needs of the students in Uttarakhand. it is noteworthy to mention that the newly created State Uttarakhand places on top priority the medical facility requirements. Keeping in mind this aspect the B.Sc. MLT course was proposed to be conducted by the Govt. of Uttarakhand in Govt. P.G. College, Rishikesh. The College has been graded as Grade “A” by the UGC-NAAC Committee and has also been given the status of Potential for Excellence by the UGC, New Delhi.
A panel inspection by the H.N.B. Garhwal University on 27 Oct. 2003 was made to verify the suitability of opening this course in the college the course was approved by the panel. By the grace of the God and by the assurance given by the Doctors and agreement letters given by various Doctors of the Rishikesh and Haridwar, this course was started in the session 2004-2005. The maximum students admitted after the written admission test conducted was 26.
A written Entrance Test of objective type multiple choice type is being conducted for the admission to first year B.Sc. MLT students in order to know the background knowledge in the subject.
Note: Objectives for each individual MLT course are included in the course syllabi given to the student at the beginning of each year.
As a student in the MLT program you must be committed to professionalism. The term professionalism includes many facets viz. responsibility for your actions, honesty, dependability, reproducibility, acceptability, punctuality, preparedness, motivation, and proper grooming etc. The MLT student must adhere strictly to the policies and procedures set forth by the Department and College.
Students admitted in this course must attend 80% of the hours assigned for the class per year to receive credit for the course as stated in the the application form and prospectus but MLT courses require a 90% attendance. Anyone acquiring greater than 10% absences in MLT courses may be dropped from the course and the MLT program. All absences in the clinical rotation are required to be fulfilled.
White shirt and black trousers for boys and white kurta & white Salwar for girls. Girls may wear trousers and shirts. White lab coat is must for lab exercises.
